About us

The Carbon Farm Network (CFN) is a cooperative of local small brands working together to build a resilient, regional fiber supply chain. By pooling resources and purchase orders, members meet the minimums required to source and produce New York State Climate Beneficial™ Verified yarn - keeping quality high, pricing more accessible, and supply more reliable for small-batch production.

Through CFN, we deepen partnerships with our local farming community and support small farms across New York State that implement carbon farming practices. Membership payments directly help fund carbon farming programs on participating regional farms, creating positive impact by improving soil health and increasing carbon sequestration, while ensuring the fiber we source is traceable and Climate Beneficial™ Verified.

Our Mission

Strengthen New York State’s regional fiber system by helping small brands source Climate Beneficial™ Verified yarn through a cooperative purchasing model. By pooling demand, we make locally grown and milled yarn more accessible and keep value circulating within our region - supporting growers, mills, and small-batch makers. Membership contributions also help fund carbon farming practices on participating farms, creating measurable local impact by improving soil health and increasing carbon sequestration, while advancing traceable, climate-positive textile supply chains.

What is Carbon Farming?

Carbon Farming is the adoption and implementation of agricultural practices intended to reduce, sequester, and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions on farms. Climate beneficial practices associated with Carbon Farming can provide additional benefits to farms by improving water quality, building biodiversity, promoting community relations, and adapting to climate change and extreme weather events.

How does our NYCFN support Carbon Farming?

The membership fees associated with our CFN as well as funding from the Advancing Markets for Producers Fund support the implementation of Carbon Farm Planning on the lands of our partnering farms. The amount of yarn we make is based on the capacities and limitations of the workable landscapes in our bioregion. This enables a distributed growth logic and a ‘commons’ approach to how we extract and regenerate resources from our lands as we produce our textiles. Our CFN operates through democratic governance, enables collaborative value creation, and supports the distributed growth of small to mid-scale businesses. This way, everyone has a stake in the cultivation and marketing of Climate Beneficial™ textiles and clothing.

Support Our Mission

In today's conventional modern farming and ranching systems, growers are financially incentivized to produce fibers using degenerative farming practices that contribute to land degradation, biodiversity loss, and climate change.

The Climate Beneficial Fiber Alliance - supported by participating organizations including Fibershed, Seed2Shirt, New York Textile Lab - is working with wool, alpaca, and cotton growers in nine primary states to accelerate adoption of conservation agriculture practices that benefit the climate, strengthen on-farm resilience, and build regional fiber systems.

Your donations help us keep this work moving. Support to New York Fibershed sustains and expands the progress already underway - accelerating the adoption of conservation agriculture practices that benefit the climate, strengthen on-farm resilience, and build regional fiber systems. Funding directly helps cover key workstreams like carbon farm planning and technical assistance, practice implementation, and market development so more acres and more producers in our region can transition from baseline to verified Climate Beneficial™ sourcing with trackable progress and impact.
